Mini Art School: Website Critique

In my first art school activity, I critiqued two websites and their flaws. I had a lot of fun doing this and it was great to apply what I had learned from the readings to reality. As I move forward, I will be looking at designs of websites differently thanks to this activity.

Enjoy the screen cast!

Hi Tim,

The video is marked as private. I was looking forward to seeing it since you said you actually enjoyed this particular exercise. Could you unlock it so myself and your classmates can check it out?

Thanks!
Erica

Hi Tim,

You're absolutely right! These are two of the worst sites I've ever seen. You should head over to Jim's blog, as he too, managed to discover another site that should be forever shut down. Can you believe people get paid to create sites like THIS?

As far as the DMV site is concerned, I agree with you -- it'd be interesting to see what this site looked like back in 2002, though I have a feeling that not much has changed. It almost appears that the only "update" was that fabulous floater welcoming you to 2012! The underlining is HORRENDOUS. I think links that have the underlining are tacky to begin with (though sometimes cannot be controlled). To underline everything leading the viewer to believe that everything is linked out is just ridiculous.

Thanks for taking the time to find TWO sites that are equally lame in completely different ways. It's always interesting to see how many different ways design layouts can fail. You're correct in pointing out that MIA has done a fabulous job of breaking several of the rules designers live by. It's a shame, because I'm actually a fan of some of her songs! Of course, the fact that her website is a disappointment in the design department is unlikely to deter those that listen to her music. Audio = win; visual = fail.

Nice job on finding two truly wonderful examples of layout design sins!
